The energy industry is undergoing significant change. Climate change has long been recognised as a force for change, and it continues to lead to new innovations and reshape the structure of the industry. In addition, the critical role of the sector in security of supply has become a major societal priority as a result of geopolitical instability. At the same time, the price of energy and the factors affecting it are now closer to everyday life for many consumers than before.

As a result, the importance of digitalisation and data has also increased for energy producers in optimising production and maintenance, as these areas now have greater business significance than before. Processes need to be more efficient and timely, which requires a strong understanding of both user needs and business requirements as a whole. At Ambientia, we have the capabilities needed to design and implement digitalisation roadmaps for our energy sector customers’ businesses, including service design, cloud technologies, data lake solutions, work management and integration expertise.

Security of supply and asset data management

Challenge: Maintaining the security of supply of equipment is critical for business continuity, but asset data is often fragmented, outdated or difficult to understand. In addition, component and maintenance activity data related to equipment may be scattered across different sources or stored in an unstructured format over the years.

Opportunities: Improve the service life of equipment. Improve maintenance planning. Reduce downtime. This is only possible if the underlying data on equipment, the condition of its components and maintenance history is in good order.

    Solutions:

    • Create centralised databases for asset data and use advanced reporting tools to improve security of supply.
    • Create an understanding of service requests and instructions related to the equipment, such as documentation and knowledge bases.
    • Collect and utilise sensor data to identify maintenance needs.
    • Ensure real-time information on spare parts and other asset balances as a prerequisite for improving maintenance processes.

    Fieldwork interfaces and mobile compatibility

Challenge: Current user interfaces do not effectively support fieldwork. In addition, the lack of location services and offline functionality makes daily work more difficult in repair activities and data collection in the field.

Opportunities: Improve the efficiency of fieldwork and the real-time availability of information. Use a robust mobile application with offline capabilities that enables higher-quality data collection in all conditions, without manual work steps, and forwards the data to back-end systems for analysis.

    Solutions:

    • Develop efficient and transparent management of maintenance work collected from different data sources.
    • Develop mobile and user-friendly solutions specifically for field conditions, enabling work to continue offline.

Improving situational awareness in network and production plant maintenance and energy production

Challenge: Improving the efficiency of energy production and managing maintenance-related shutdown in production plants are key business challenges in the energy industry. In the same way, transparency in the situational awareness of electricity network maintenance significantly supports fieldwork management and work prioritisation in both normal and storm conditions.

Opportunities: Improve energy efficiency and reduce the impact of shutdowns on production, while proactively ensuring the high-quality operation of the electricity network by addressing maintenance needs.

    Solutions:

    • Develop and implement intelligent work management solutions that use real-time data to support maintenance activities.
    • Use machine learning to improve forecasting and develop small applications to accelerate processes.
    • Our SaaS solution for predictive maintenance in energy industry production plants.

Process optimisation through effective use of data

Challenge: Changes in energy consumption pricing models and fluctuations in market electricity prices have made production process optimisation even more critical than before. At the same time, the role of data in developing and managing business in the energy sector is becoming increasingly important.

When business processes rely on the data collected from them, the data used for optimisation must be of high quality. Maintaining data and ensuring consistency is challenging, and identifying incorrect data is critical. Effective data solutions can be used to optimise the bottlenecks of everyday operations across and between different functions.

Opportunities: Enable the use of data in business processes and as a tool for management. Improve data quality and availability. Strengthen decision-making and optimise operations to become more efficient.

    Solutions:

    • Identify the potential of data from a business perspective and develop the required metrics for effective management.
    • Identify data anomalies — the capability to detect incorrect data quickly and ensure that the calculation of production plant efficiency is accurate.
    • Develop automated tools for identifying and correcting data.
    • Further utilise machine learning for better data processing.
    • Improve data visualisation and understandability, bringing all functions to the same level of awareness regardless of the systems in use.

Modernising applications critical to security of supply requires the right kind of insight

Challenge: The energy industry is no exception when it comes to how significantly business requirements have changed from previous decades, as data from different sources is increasingly used in new business models and to improve operational efficiency. This creates essential challenges for the development of business applications from the perspective of cloud transition and modernisation.

A specific characteristic of the energy industry is often that data and processes classified as critical cannot be used directly in public cloud services, which means that utilising cloud technologies requires other kinds of solutions.

Opportunities: Ambientia has extensive experience in modernising business applications and designing architectures based on cloud technologies. This enables different data sources to be utilised effectively and makes the development of business applications more agile.

Solutions: Private Cloud technology provides a solution for processing critical data and processes in a modern application runtime environment. The Red Hat OpenShift platform enables the flexibility and scalability needed for this purpose.
